Word of The Day

The task of the grammarian is a difficult one. A word must be found which everyone can easily use. A common mistake is to choose a word which is too long, like elephant. Or too complicated, like austere. So I started at the beginning of the Oxford dictionary and I came across a simple word with only 3 letters, AND.
So what does it mean? The definition of and according to the Oxford dictionary is: AND is a logical operator that outputs a value if and only if this output value matches all of the input values.
Typically this function is implemented using an AND gate. In artificial intelligence, you could use a perceptron combined with a sigmoid activation function. In electronics you would typically use a circuit with a p-channel metal oxide field effect transistor.
So there you have it. Let’s all ensure we use this word tonight in its proper context.
For those of you whose topics tonight do not include artificial intelligence or electrical circuits, don’t despair. It turns out this little word is also a useful pause filler. Here at President’s Club we usually use “u” or “um” for this purpose, but I as the grammarian will be counting those and you will get negative browny points for using them. And is just a little longer and I will count them too, but you get positive browny points for using it. And if you’re predicting a long pause you can stretch it out, like this: aaaaannnnd. Or chain them together: and, and, and, and.
And is also useful to start sentences with, like this one: And she opened her AND gate to let the logic flow.
In speeches here at TM and is also extremely useful to join a lot of short sentences in your speech together to make it one long sentence. This can sometimes help to confuse your evaluator or to put them to sleep.
But that’s not all, folks. These little babies on the end of your wrists are your ands.
Like any good English word, you can add extensions. So if your hands are particularly small, you can refer to them as your andies. Or if you’re very good with your hands you might be called Andean.
The Afrikaans version is also acceptable. This word is even better in Afrikaans, its only two letters.
That’s the word, and that’s how to use it. Let’s all see if we can make use of this word here tonight.
