CEO to Employees

I have called this company meeting in keeping with our new spirit of transparency.

I have been blessed in that I have been appointed and have served as the CEO of this company for a full 3 months now, and I feeI I’ve come to know you as members of a big family. During that time I have bedded down our marketing proposition and have been assimilating our financial and operational positioning. As you know, I arrived at a company in dire straits, with the promise of turning the situation around quickly and efficiently, and that’s exactly what I intend to do. Now I stand before you with full knowledge of the paradigm within which we have encapsulated this operation. I have assembled a top team of consultants and experts and we have worked tirelessly night and day to put together a framework within which a new, synergistic and relevant structure will be born. Having said that, I want each and everyone one of you all to know how important you are to the company. Without you we would be up to our necks in the brown unpleasant business. You, the employees, are the heart and soul of this operation. We love you.

Ladies and gentlemen, I will be brief. My proposal has been put forward to the board, and it is a mere formality before acceptance. In a nutshell your top management have put together a framework within which we can move forward in a synergistic manner. In order to avoid egg on our faces, we have instituted a consultative forum from where we have extracted relevant data and information.

The first item on our agenda was, of necessity, remuneration issues for our top management team. We all know that sought after skills are priceless. You will all agree with me that no one can reasonably expect MBA graduates to operate on the pittance the previous management received, so our remuneration committee has put forward recommendations to address these issues. I won’t mention numbers but suffice to say that these numbers are looking more appropriate. I have, politely, humbly and generously agreed to stay on under the terms offered, together with a reasonable amount of share options to be transferred to my account from those reserved for employees. I’m sure you will agree that this is the least you can do to obtain the services of a top turnaround specialist, myself and the team I have assembled for your benefit. We all have histories of exceptional and extraordinary performance in many sectors. I insist that you, as valued employees, have only the very best looking after your interests. Therefore no price is too great, no financial amount too excessive…

I know there have been rumblings from a few, very few, unreasonable employees, the thorns in our mist. But who are they to say what should or should not be – they are not God.

Nothing good comes cheap, there’s always some give and take. I therefore call on you to come together to give a little. Now that the time has come I know you will step up to the plate and bat for the winning side, and do your bit, however small, for the greater good.

The good news must by the ordinary laws of economics, of supply and demand, of standard accounting practises, come at a price. Therefore we instituted a committee to address the issues at hand and obtain a consultative review of our entire salaries structure. This committee have exerted themselves tirelessly and in a committed and transparent fashion, and have produced a 200 page report of recommendations, which I won’t bore you by reading to you. However, I will read a few relevant and insightful extracts:
“It is the committee’s opinion that the competitive environment necessitates a shift in wage structure within operational departments, manufacturing and marketing departments, establishing a sound financial footing to go forward. We recommend that a minimum of half of the overall operational staff number (that’s you) be allowed to tender formal departure papers, and to cut the other half’s remuneration salary by a proportion commensurate with the accepted paradigm shift, a minimum of 40% based on performance. “

That’s the very considered view of the committee, and who can argue that they haven’t applied their minds completely and generously to the matter? I certainly am in no position to counter an argument.

Now I know we have each and every one of your wholehearted support on this. Suffice to say, anyone of you who finds themselves tending to lean against these generous terms offered by the company will find themselves in a difficult working situation probably somewhere near the coal face literally and figuratively, and we all know our safety record recently has been somewhat wanting. Inadvisable from any point of view.

Speaking of safety, employee safety being a matter close to my heart, I have taken it upon myself to address the situation personally. I have hired these new, large looking safety reps who will be visiting each of you personally in the coming weeks, and will bring the relevant documentation to you to sign. Assuming the signing process goes ahead smoothly, I’m sure the safety reps will ensure each and every one of you a healthy and safe departure from the building at the end of the working day.

With that, thank you all for being such excellent employees. I do hope that those of you who remain will continue to do your utmost, work tirelessly for the good of this company. In fact, I am sure you will. Thank you all for your loyalty.
