Save theEarth
We humans need to take a long and hard look at the way we do things. Up until now everything was more or less fine for a lot of us. We all went to school and got educated. Bought houses and cars. Had children.
But things have changed. There are nearly 6bn humans now on earth. An unprecedented and unsustainable plague of a single species on earth.
My brother recently went to the knysna heads. He showed me his photos. I didn’t recognise it. It looks like a city. When I went 20 years ago there were no houses visible, it was all natural veld.
40 years ago my father bought a bit of land near Hoedspruit. It had no roads on nor did any of the land for hundreds of kms around it. Animals lived there freely. Now the entire area is crisscrossed with roads and regular vehiclular traffic. And driving to Hoedspruit used to be a 500km drive through uninhabited countryside and a few one horse towns. Now you will pass through massive townships extending literally dundreds of kms. And the towns are bustling cities surrounded by huge mines.
It is now accepted in the scientific community that weather patterns are changing. In 2010 more people dies from natural disasters than any other year. The rate of species extinction is now 500 species per month.
The earth is dying. Its our fault. We must take responsibility and fix it.
The only way to fix it is through personal sacrifice now. Each and every person on earth must make fundamental changes to the way they live, and most importantly the big energy users and consumers. That’s you and I.
When I say fundamental changes I mean individual and societal changes. Changes to the structures we live in. The places we live. The things we do. In fact, we need to give up our lifestyles completely. We need to restructure the way we feed ourselves. We need to restructure the way we distribute resources.
We can no longer drive in cars to work. We must live close to work and walk or cycle. We must start reducing the sprawl of our cities by knocking down suburbs and building central high rises, and living underground. And we must reduce the human population. We must only each have one child. We must cut our energy consumption vastly – in fact, we must each and every one disconnect immediately from the elctrciity grid. We must stop shopiing. We must stop eating meat. We must start looking after each other and our natural environment and animals, make sure everyone has enough food. We must redeploy ourselves from retailing jobs to mining, manufacturing, services and farming. In short we must live low-impact creative lives.
